Awesome learning experience

I found this service to be helpful for us as a whanau, helped me to understand new approaches in regards to his diet. Helped us to overcome what we thought to be a strict food diet which now is eating a lot more varieties of foods. Thanks to all the different approaches of new foods, gave us a range of ideas of how to introduce these new food groups into his diet. Am very happy with the overall service that Maria has given. I know we have a long way to go yet, but we have had an awesome learning experience overall and will continue to set goals so we can overcome R’s strict diet.

Lots of different options for communicating

B now has lots of different options for communicating his needs and wants – verbalising, key word signing, PODD. His ability to communicate has improved when he is well, but he also has so much more to say, so this goal will be ongoing. He has had significant health challenges over this period. It has been reassuring to have support in identifying the next steps for B in working towards our goals for him. The education regarding strategies and how to implement them has been wonderful. One of our main life goals for B is for him to remain confident and happy and for him to believe he has a lot to contribute – the play based style of therapy does this so well – THANK YOU!

A customised communication training session for year 1 class

We received the DVD in the mail yesterday. I was watching it and cried. Wow. You did an AMAZING job!! All the teacher aides, the teacher and her support worker had said how fantastic it was and I’m so glad I got to see it. I’ll show my husband tonight. Thank you very very much. S was so chuffed – you can plainly see in the video that she was very excited to have the children know what to do in having a conversation with her. This is perfect and will help everyone going forward. You put in a heap of effort and it turned out perfectly. Thank you thank you thank you!!!

[Phone call a week later from Mum] Kids have changed the way they treat S – much more opening and welcome. ‘Hi S, how you’re going? Would you like me to help you get out of the chair S?’ and waiting for her to respond. It’s been life changing for S. Her life at school wouldn’t be the same as now.

Took the journey with us

It was great that Maria was prepared to shelve strategies that didn’t work or apply and move on to looking at alternatives. She took the journey with us to try to resolve our issues rather than having a ‘top-down’ approach. Autism is much more complicated than that and she recognises this.
